Effective June 9, 2009, Minnesota's seat belt law becomes a primary offense, meaning that law enforcement can stop motorists specifically for seat belt violations. Drivers and passengers in all seating positions must be buckled up or in the correct child restraint.

A seat belt ticket is $25, but usually costs more than $100 with administrative fees.

This law is first and foremost a law to ensure motorists are traveling safely. A seat belt is your best defense in a crash - especially when Minnesota roads are threatened with speeding, distracted and impaired drivers. In a crash, unbelted passengers can slam into and injure or kill others in a vehicle.

The true enforcement of this law begins with you. Speak up and insist that your passengers buckle up.

Updated booster seat law takes effect July 1

In addition, an updated booster seat law goes into effect on July 1. A child who is both under age 8 and shorter than 4 feet 9 inches is required to be fastened in a child safety seat that meets federal safety standards. Under this law, a child cannot use a seat belt alone until they are age 8 or 4 feet 9 inches tall.

It is recommended to keep a child in a booster based on height rather than age.
