Sustainability

From feedback gathered at Imagine Bloomington community meetings, the City developed key themes.

  • Shape the future rather than react to a changing environment.
  • Provide children with opportunities to succeed and lead.
  • Support the efforts of our business community.
  • Be stewards of our environment.
  • Preserve and enhance neighborhood vitality.
These themes are integrated with City sustainability goals: protecting and enhancing Bloomington's environmental, economic and social assets for ourselves and future generations.

Three aspects of sustainability

Environmental

Bloomington's history of good stewardship provides a foundation for future environmental sustainability. Bloomington's early leaders sought to protect our valuable resources by:

  • Safeguarding the marshes along Nine Mile Creek and in the Minnesota River Valley and
  • Setting aside one-third of the city for parks and open space.

Economic

Bloomington has grown a very strong financial base that is reflected in our three triple-A bond ratings.

  • Only 24 out of 19,000 local governments have three triple-A ratings.
  • These bond ratings reflect the City's sustainable approach to fiscal management

Social

Social sustainability is about meeting the needs of everyone in our community, regardless of their socio-economic status.

  • This is even more important as our demographics change.
  • The city's goal is to provide suitable facilities for older adults while at the same time providing opportunities for a younger more diverse, population.
