Strategic initiatives

The City developed strategic initiatives in four core areas:

Feedback for community input showed that these core areas were of primary interest to residents and businesses. Achievement of the initiatives will strengthen the community vision.

Renewal

These initiatives will focus on:

  • Alternative transportation and the Park Master Plan;
  • Code enforcement to ensure that properties are clean and maintained;
  • Affordable and older adult housing with a wider range of choices; and
  • District plans - for commercial areas of the city that will represent 85% of the city's commercial growth in the next 20 years.

Infrastructure

New and ongoing initiatives include:

  • Pavement Management Program.
  • Improvements to traffic signal timing that will improve traffic flow and reduce energy use.
  • Water and sewer infrastructure improvements to:
    • Ensure capacity for future development.
    • Maintain the value of underground capital investment.

Services

A few of the many examples of service initiatives include:

  • Continuing to convert more manicured turf to natural prairie, an initiative begun 20 years ago.
  • Snow and ice control efforts that reduce the amount of sand making the streets safer to the public.
  • Constructing permeable asphalt parking lots and rain gardens to allow infiltration of rainwater into existing soils, reducing runoff by as much as 90%.
  • An e-mail subscription service to send out important updates from the City that will improve communication with residents.
  • Renewing our already award-winning website and making more services available on-line 24/7.

Community building

Bloomington will maintain core services that build community, such as:

  • Public Health programs.
  • Cultural, Parks and Recreation programs and events - like the city's recent year-long Sesquicentennial Celebration.
  • National Night Out and Neighborhood Watch programs.
  • Farmers Market.
